Sabres Slice Another Chunk of Leafs' Playoff Hopes

The Toronto Maple Leafs couldn't hold off the Buffalo Sabres, losing 6-2 on Saturday night.

The loss bumped Buffalo up the Eastern Conference standings, one point away from a playoff spot. The Leafs are now 6 points back, with 10 games remaining.

7:06 into the game Ales Kotalik scored Buffalo's first goal on a power play, with McCabe off for tripping. Assists went to Derek Roy and Jason Pominville.

Ian White replied back at 13:39 but the 1-1 tie was short lived. 45 seconds later Jochen Hecht got one past Leafs' Vesa Toskala, assisted by Jason Pominville and Paul Gaustad.

Drew Stafford's goal at 17:41, assisted by Patrick Kaleta would be the last goal for either team until the third period.

Jiri Tlusty's goal at 7:29 into the third, assisted by Alexei Ponikarovsky and Alexander Steen gave the crowd at ACC a flicker of hope. They were dimmed barely four minutes later when Pominville scored, aided by Paul Gaustad and Jochen Hecht.

Hecht was at it again, notching his second assist of the night on Daniel Paille's goal at 14:55

Leafs coach Paul Maurice pulled Toskala for the extra attacker, but it backfired. Henrik Tallinder popped the puck into the empty Leafs' net less than three minutes left in the game.

The Leafs next game is Tuesday night against the Islanders in Nassau, NY.

Did you write this?

It had to be known last week that the Leafs are not a good enough team to win 10+ of their last 13 games, they simply do not have the steam. And it'll take 90 points to make the playoffs. The only reason it seemed the Leafs were still in it is because of the weakness of that Flyers squad, but they're still better than the Leafs on paper (when healthy). Now Philly is losing their grip on their playoff spot, I hope it's the Caps who make it, although I'd be somewhat apprehensive if they met the Habs in the first round.

Die hard Leafs fans have known for weeks, if not months the Leafs wouldn't make it. I would love to see Ovechkin and Semin in the playoffs. The Habs are my second favourite team so if they met, I'd have a rough time!
