On the Radio. (For every Montreal Canadien fan)

Okay let me give a run down of how musically uncool I am.

I'm pretty uncool at it. Sure I like showtunes, I've seen boatloads of them - but that's not cool isn't it? And my regular radio listening composes of that alternative radio station or the mainstream pop station. Every song I enjoy has been filtered down by a complex route of going through my siblings before rubbing off on me. So excuse me while I look through my ipod list and pick out songs that make me feel cheesy and happy. Because it's nagging me, I'm going to justify my choices more

1. Wolfmother - Apple Tree
Nyssa can you remember me!? I'm the one who picked the apple tree! It's easy and jumps right in. This next to "Joker & The Thief" are two most overplayed songs but can't you totally imagine this as an opener for the team? The whole slow "after the smoke" walk as they come into view. You know the one. That and the lead singer's totally creepy voice has become a cool staple for wannabe Australian rockers.

2. Strokes - Take it or Leave It
Um, I only bought their first album and stuck with it. I never listened to their other songs. However it affected me a lot. I brought this cd with me a lot, I memorised the order of each song and it was everything I loved. Up until I accidentally left it on the bottom of my bag for too long and crushed it - ultimately snapping it into tiny little pieces. What this has to do with making the Habs playlist of ultimateness? Well I could go all philosophical and say something about the intensity and how the Habs... kind of lack that. But really it's just a rockin' song for a rockin' team?
He's gonna break your back for a chance / He's gonna steal your friends if he can / He's gonna win someday... Oh, he will

3. Queen - Don't Stop Me Now
Hee. I mean Hee, I love these guys. And I seem to love this song. If you don't get revved by this song, you have to admit it's pretty catchy. But do I really have to explain the importance of Queen?
Don't stop me now, I'm having such a good time I'm having a ball / Don't stop me now, if you wanna have a good time just give me a call

4. Franz Ferdinand - You Could Have It So Much Better
It really makes me jumpy. I dunno about you but I just can't see why it can't be a song for the moment. The repeating chorus, the intensity. It makes darn good song. It's an uplifting song and really, the intensity makes you happy.
Well I'm just a voice in your earpiece / Telling you no, it's not alright /You know, you could have it so much better / You could have it so much better

5. Bob Evans - Nowhere Without You
I'm sorry with overpopulating the list with Australian singers but here you go. To me, it's a song about a struggle but an optimistic one. Okay lame comparison. But I'm sure this song is handy for a montage. Because without the Habs I don't know how to live.
Where would I go? / What would I do? / I would be nowhere without you / Now I know heavens above you I can grow / I just can’t make it on my own

6. Ok Go - Do What You Want
Years, years ago, my brother told me about a band named Ok Go. I told him that he was lame and I didn't care. Now I kinda do. Their current oversaturation is kind of alright as I used to listen to their albums thirty times. However, this song always pumps me up.
You said, come on, come on / Do what you want / What could go wrong? / Oh come on come on

7. Kaiser Chiefs - I Predict A Riot
My sister used to demand that the song was "I got Tourettes", thankfully she was wrong. This used to dominate the alternate radio airwarves at home for a while - but it's catchy. You see a pattern with the songs I seem to like? But with a chorus of "I Predict a Riot", I just had to add it to the list. Cause the Habs love to pretend to be intimidating even when people don't think we are. Komisarek - this one's for you!
Walking through town is quite scary /It's not very sensible either / A friend of a friend he got beaten / He looked the wrong way at a policeman

8. Ben Folds Five - One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces
Okay so this doesn't have a totally rockin' vibe but it's rockin' jazz.
Two hundred solemn faces are you / If you really wanna see me / Check your papers and the TV / Look who's telling who what to do / Kiss my ass good-bye

9. Regina Spektor - On The Radio
Very poetic, simple and very effective. It seems to search for that common ground in everyone and tear right in. Okay bad analogy. But I love this song. And while I don't really know much of her other songs, this is something that's really fascinating. Because it's somewhat ambiguous, you can try to think of a time where earth stopped and you could only think of one thing. Everyone knows that's what the Cup's for.
This is how it works
You're young until you're not
You love until you don't
You try until you can't
You laugh until you cry
You cry until you laugh
And everyone must breathe
Until their dying breath

10. Eels - Souljacker Pt 1
I have no freaking idea.
22 miles of hard road / 33 years of tough luck / 44 skulls buried in the ground / Crawling down through the muck / Oh yeah

11. Eskimo Joe - Forever Young/Setting Sun
Err. Another Australian band of obscurity. Their website hopes to break that US scene like every other band. I'll admit that all these songs are really just a fragment of every single band that seems to hold a soft spot for me. Shaddup! I love these guys. I love them love them love love them. It's all about waiting. And the team only waits for one thing!
And if I see you waiting for the setting sun, / It will never come / And if it ever comes, you're forever young / You're forever young

12. Travis - Love Will Come Through
I love this song. It's my "get better" song if my team loses. I like my UK groups and well it's very soothing. And that's a swanky cowboy hat in the video. When the team comes up short, I immediately switch this song on. It's the "don't worry - you tried" song:
So take me, don't leave me / Take me, don't leave me / Baby, love will come through / It's just waiting for you

... It's not very hockey/habs related this playlist.

I'm sorry, was that list supposed to be hockey related? Wasn't it your idea in the first place?

:)

j/k!

I have no sense of hockey and music! I'm sure if the Habs were here, they'd compliment me on my choices... *sulks*

Jordi, give "Fidelity" by Spektor a try. It's my favourite song of hers.

Awww, it may not have much to do with hockey on the face of it, but any list with One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces and Travis can't be all bad.
