Friday Five - Friday August 24th, 2007

Sorry for the delay in getting this up, HG is away for the weekend. Better late than never, right?
Since summer is slowly coming to an end, today's theme is 'Back to School'.

  1. Do you prefer old-fashioned backpacks, messenger bags or those funny one-shoulder backpacks?
  2. Crayons, pencil crayons or markers?
  3. Who was/is your favourite teacher?
  4. Where is your favourite place to eat lunch?
  5. Did/Do you drive, take the bus, rollerblade, bike, walk or carpool to school?

Oh, Sherry, this is unbelievably topical. I'm going back to school for the first time in four years...

1. Backpack. Preferably from MEC.

2. Ha! Pencil crayons (I say "Ha!" only in response to the last time we got a question like this)

3. Ohhh... Mr. Kelley, who I had for English three times in a row in high school.

4. Anywhere where there's a microwave that isn't too goopy. Or outside, if it's not effin' freezing out.

5. A bus pass is included in the cost of my tuition, so I'll take the bus every day except for the one when I'm planning on working out and need to haul some gear in.

I like the regular backpacks. I was usually carrying too much crap to put all the weight on one poor shoulder.

Crayons, pencil crayons or markers?
Crayons for the most part. I love crayons... except that they melt...

Who was/is your favourite teacher?
I had the best English teacher in grade 12... man, I loved that guy.

Where is your favourite place to eat lunch?
We ate in one of the classrooms if it was too hot out (Arizona, hello!) or out in the middle of the hustle & bustle if it was nice.

Did/Do you drive, take the bus, rollerblade, bike, walk or carpool to school?
I've done all of the above. Ok, I haven't skated or rode a bike...

Old-fashioned backpacks. Glad you didn't mention the "backpacks" with rollers because only the supernerds used those!

2. Crayons, pencil crayons or markers?
Colored pencils (I'm assuming those are pencil crayons)

3. Who was/is your favourite teacher?
Dr. Porrello. I took four of his classes in college because he was such a great professor.

4. Where is your favourite place to eat lunch?
I'm assuming favorite place to eat lunch at school. From Kindergarten to High School we always ate outside. We only ate inside the cafeteria if it was raining. In college, I think I probably ate lunch at one of the places on campus or outside somewhere. Apparently at one time in the recent past my college was ranked 4th for best campus food.

5. Did/Do you drive, take the bus, rollerblade, bike, walk or carpool to school?
The only time I didn't walk to school was during intermediate school (grade 6-8) when I took the bus. Not the yellow school bus (because my district didn't have those) but the regular public transportation that hardly anyone in our city ever used so it was always full with 6-8th graders in the mornings and afternoons. I grew up within walking distance to the elementary and high school and in college I lived on-campus and across the street.

This is reminding me that I'm procrastinating from packing for school right now. I'm supposed to be getting ready to hit the Oregon Trail...

1.)backpack/messenger bag
2.)Crayons. Jamie just bought me a box of 120!
3.)Fro, she was the greatest teacher ever. She was one of my U of M German Profs.
4.) We ate outside during the fall/spring, in the very sunny cafeteria in the winter, and when we could my friends and I snuck off campus and ate out.
5.) In high school I drove to school, but now I live on campus so I walk/bike/longboard to class.

1. I used a regular backpack. They didn't have the shoulder ones when I was in school.

2. Pencil crayons. I like that. Sounds more interesting and accurate than "Colored Pencils."

3. Me! I am my favorite teacher.

My favorite when I was young was my third grade teacher, Mrs. Anderson.

4. We didn't have a choice of where to eat when I was in school. We ate outside. In high school, we'd sit on the grass when the weather was nice.

5. I took the bus, walked and got driven to school.

This almost makes me want to go back to school.... almost.

1)Do you prefer old-fashioned backpacks, messenger bags or those funny one-shoulder backpacks?
messenger bag for my laptop, spirals and pens/pencils/hilighters, carry the books and Starbucks.

2)Crayons, pencil crayons or markers?
Yes. I'm artsy AND an office manager now... i love them all! But I tend to love Sharpies best.

3)Who was/is your favourite teacher?
HS - Mr. Larsen - jazz choir and theatre.
College - Matt Mathesius - English 201

4)Where is your favourite place to eat lunch?
My desk... I'm usually the only one in the building so I don't get to leave much.

5)Did/Do you drive, take the bus, rollerblade, bike, walk or carpool to school?
Kindergarden - walk
Grade 1-3 - Bus
Grade 4-10 - Ma drove me
Grade 11-College - I drove myself

Well, from a back-to-school perspective, we should mention we're both old enough that we were in school before anyone had invented concern about childrens' back health. We slung two-shoulder backpacks over one shoulder, and have the hunchbacks now to prove it. Old school, baby!

2.Crayons, pencil crayons or markers?

Markers, the old-school ones that came in styrofoam packs and smelled of fruit. They made the most satisfying squeaking sound when you'd take them out of their packs...

3. Who was/is your favourite teacher?

Schnookie's favorite was Mr. G, her teacher from first to fourth grade. He was fun, goofy, enthusiastic, and actually almost prompted Schnookie to become a teacher herself. Pookie's favorite was Mr. Virrill, her 10th- and 11th-grade English teacher. He helped her form the Homeric Appreciation Society, which was a club that met during lunch to watch The Simpsons.

4. Where is your favourite place to eat lunch?

When we were in school we'd eat anywhere but the cafeteria. Outside, mostly. Nowadays we both take lunch at our desks, in front of our computers.

5. Did/Do you drive, take the bus, rollerblade, bike, walk or carpool to school?

We drove. Or rather, our mom drove us.

I've always been a one-shoulder guy. I was using something akin to a laptop bag in the sixth grade, but that was before it became fashionable. It started becoming more common once I stopped using it though (yeah.). But I came back to it later.

Pencil crayons, in theory.

Teacher, not sure, maybe my 4th and 5th grade teacher or my grade 8 French teacher.

I don't have a favourite, but it's Subway more often than anywhere else.

I usually bus it to school.

Dude yes! I totally only used only one strap of my two strap backpack way back in the day. My mom was always furious that I would wear out the left strap of them all the time.

1. backpackin' all the way

2. colored pencils

3. hmm good question - probably some of my professors from college

4. i only had a 10 minute lunch - then i would go to band for 30 minutes - what a dork : )

5. i used to hate the bus : (

kirsten, did you also think it was unconscionably dorky to wear a two-strapped backpack over both shoulders? I know when I walk to work with mine now, I feel so self-consciously dorky wearing it correctly...

ellie, I was in my school's madrigals choral group, and we practiced in a classroom during lunch. Pookie wasn't much of a singer, but tried out for the group when she hit high school just for the excuse not to eat in the cafeteria.

i'm game.

1. OFB
2. Crayons. Reminds me of a time when life was simpler and I don't have to make "neat" art with it.
3. haha...my awesome gr 11 biology teacher. Hilarious man.
4. In high school, in the hallway with a few friends.
5. I got a ride in the morning and bussed home.

1. Backpack, with the straps fully extended, so it bounces off your butt.

2. Markers, better to make hockey signs with...

3. Ms. Pitcher in 6th grade. She was my fav, even though she gave me detention.

4. Outside. I hated being cooped up all day.

5. Walked my whole life. Except when I got my car Senior year, I drove for the last month, even though I just lived down the street.
