Fantasy...Hockey

While I knew bringing up Fantasy Hockey to my non-hockey friends at this time of year would produce strange stares in my direction, I was fairly certain that HLOGers would appreciate coming across the words fantasy, hockey, and competition in a post.

For the past two seasons I've played Fantasy Hockey on Yahoo! along with friends from high school and college, among which only one other participant is a huge hockey fan. Since not enough of my friends cared too deeply about Fantasy Hockey both seasons did not involve competition with monetary compensation to the winner(s). Due to the lack of "real" competition, each season started with a certain number of players and ended with a few less. The winner was still able to brag about his or her accomplishment but it was always pretty anticlimatic.

Now that I have interweb friends who are just as interested in hockey as I am, I was wondering if any of you would like to form a Fantasy Hockey group. I've only ever used Yahoo! but I'm open to another format. Since I don't actually "know" any of you, I would prefer to partake in a free group, unless someone puts up a convincing argument. If you're interested in forming a group (or wouldn't mind if I joined yours) leave a comment or send me an email at pc[dot]velvet[at]gmail[dot]com.
(I really should have created a better email address...)

I would totally do it! I played with a bunch of friends last year and I'm actually not sure they're intending to do it again so I was afraid I'd have to hang around and leech onto someone else who was setting something up...which, well, I guess I am, in the end :P

Dude, in order to make it cooler, we could start contributing to a pool of prizes. For example, I have two Deidre Martin duplicates (I know I know) that I'll be more than happy to award to the winner - along with maybe some pucks or whatever I can scrounge off online. It's nothing flashy but just trying to raise the stakes. And no, you don't have to all contribute.

Er.. Jordi there. Don't hurt me.

I'll do it! I'll do it! I had a "Pretty Boys With Funny Hair And Goofy Names" team last year for our playoff pool and managed to sweep the penalty minutes competition handily.

I'd definitely play!

Maybe everyone involved should buy a little knick knacky thing - a puck, a mini-jersey, a pin etc. from her team - and the winner gets the whole kit and caboodle. It would be like a little HLoG gift pack and no one would have to spend too much money. Something like that?

Great idea ladies!! I like it! It could either be something you already have or something really inexpensive but hockey related or a giveaway that we received free at a hockey game!

I was in 3 leagues (two Sporting News one, one with work and one other with friends, and a Yahoo head-to-head one) last year...it's good times for sure.

I actually blame a fantasy league I helped out in two years ago for my recent resurging interest in hockey in general, rather than just in the Flames specifically.

Would it be limited to the ladies? I was thinking of sitting out of fantasy hockey this season, but if there's a seat in your pool, I'd participate. I understand if not though, just wondering.

I'd be up for it, but I've never done fatasy hockey before, so someone would have to explain what's going on...

Oh I'm in. I have also never done fantasy hockey, I've observed half-heartedly before but it's just not as interesting when someone else does it... lol.

KMS - I am offended at the "don't KNOW any of you" comment. I'm hurt. :P

I'm in too, if someone wants to really explain fantasy hockey to me. I think I only have the general gist of it. I've never done it before, just spectated :D.

Apparently it's even too early for Yahoo to begin Fantasy Hockey, so I'll keep your names in mind and will notify you when the Fantasy season begins. I wasn't expecting non-HLOGers to be interested in playing so first I'm going to accept HLOGers (since that was my original idea for a league) but if there is space for more then I will invite others. In a couple weeks I'll post something on my blog about it with general Yahoo Fantasy Hockey instructions. I'm planning on forming a Head-to-Head competition style league because I think it ups the intensity on a week-to-week basis compared to the rotisserie style league.
