Who's Not Honoring Your Team Now

Yesterday we posted on our blog a beef we have with VS misrepresenting the reasons the New Jersey Devils won their series with the Tampa Bay Lightning. It seems that every time the Devils end up on a national broadcast, the talking heads are describing the 1995 team with no regard for the fact that the 2007 team is a very different beast. We can't help but feel that the mainstream media hasn't watched a Devils game in a decade and doesn't bother doing even a smidgeon of research. Our question to HLOG is, does everyone feel this way? When your team gets picked up for a national broadcast, are the announcers just as clueless about the team and the players? And is CBC as bad about this as NBC and VS are?

Totally. When the Habs were not sucking, they made half assed answers about Guy Carbonneau being awesome and whatnot.

yep - everything is about crosby when vs is hosting. and then you have nbc saying rutuu sucks and that guys like him have no place in the league. as usual i turn the tv on mute and put mike lange on the radio.

I think Vs. has a little slot into which they file each team. Anything aspect of said team's play that doesn't fit in the slot they just ignore entirely. Sometimes their play by play people are pretty good. Their talking heads? Just awful.

Meg, yes, that's it exactly! They have talking points about each team and they can't stand to go off those points no matter what the game in front of them is saying. Very irritating sometimes.

I hate Bob Cole calling us the "Ottawa Sens." It's just so unnatural. It's not our name. I stopped listening to him this season on CBC, because he doesn't know any of the Senators' names ... he just calls them "the Senator player." And when TSN hosts Buffalo-Ottawa matches, they are pretty biased towards Buffalo because they are catering to Buffalo. I've slowly learned to tune it all out. We don't need no talking heads.

CBC is usually much better, those guys are all past NHL-ers and usually know their stuff. NBC and OLNUSUS make me want to hurl for the most part (thank god they stopped with the rail cam, that made me ill and you couldn't see the play clearly) because they always talk about Sid and never about the rest of the team. Talbot? Brilliant this year. Staal? Stupendous. A whole host of other great players, and they (understandably, but still) focus on Crosby. CBC doesn't unless they're talking about a game he did something in, thank heavens, but really it's interesting that they DON'T reference just how much the Pens have really blown in the last 6 years other than to just talk about it as 'B.C.'...Before Crosby.

VS is definitely bad. I spent the first round for VAN/DAL basically feeling like I was being insulted by them, definitely in games one and two. To your point, they couldn't help but keep describing the team from '98-'99. I don't know if it was done that way because of the American audience base, but it was pathetic. It took to the end of the game 7 for them to recognize anyone else on the Vancouver roster other then Luongo (then again, Vancouver's play sure helped that in games five and six!).

NBC has never, to my knowledge, shown a Canucks game so I have no idea how good or bad it would be on there.

I don't know... people see Martin Brodeur plus names like Elias and Gomez and Gionta, and they figure that's the same team as ever.

But VS is dumb, I don't know how the NHL could let their ESPN deal fall through.

How annoying is Brett Hull on NBC?
His tone and negativity get on my nerves. And he has definite favorite and enemy teams, which are usually wrong.
VS is doing their best, given they started from zero. But I like my local broadcasts (MN) best of all.
