I'm no marketing expert, but...

So there is a huge Stanley Cup Playoffs on Versus ad featuring Sidney Crosby...on the back cover of this week's issue of The Hockey News. Now call me crazy, but if I get The Hockey News, I already know that the playoffs are underway. A similar television campaign featuring Cindy and the boys is airing during the playoff games. Again, if I am watching a playoff game, you probably don't need to tell me that it is NHL playoff time.

Shouldn't these ads be in a non-hockey related media? I checked my latest issue of ESPN the Magazine (sorry to kill so many trees, but I got this sub as a freebie last year) hoping maybe there would at least be a Crosby ad in there, but nope, no such luck.

At first I was annoyed that the NHL was focusing on Cindy and the Penguins as though they are in the Finals already, but I understand that getting the Cindy name out there is critical to opening up the sport to new fans. But if you are going to promote Cindy and the boys, wouldn't it be a better idea to do it in some non-hockey related media?

Just saying....

The main reason that they have been unable to air/print commercials on ESPN shows or in the magazine is that they won't accept the ads since they don't want to advertise a rival station.

That is one of the big problems with going the OLN/Versus route. Sure, they treat the NHL better but everyone gets ESPN.

I guess that makes sense, but there are other magazines they could target and maybe even *gasp* network television that is not currently broadcasting a playoff game.

Anyone seen any playoff ads in a non-hockey setting? I guess I am just finally getting frustrated with the NHL's lack of vision here...

On this subject of playoffs not being anywhere, I work in a sports bar and we have about 18 televisions on just about every package you can imagine (and yes, Center Ice. Many an hour and liver cell were killed in the bar this winter), however last night, as I was just skimming over the tvs for scores and such and the only...ONLY...thing I saw on them was the highlight of the past Devils/Lightning game. Once, just once. How many times did I see that stupid broken bull sign repair? About four. How many times did I see something about football, a season which is OVER? More times than I can remember. I know ESPN dropped the league when they had the lockout, but really, the lack of attention such an amazing sport is given is truly sad, especially during such an exciting time as the playoffs.

That is one of the problems with ESPN. They only cover sports that they have a financial interest in hence the recent spate of NASCAR and Arena Football coverage.

This is something I've been complaining about all season long. It's especially stupid to see the ads while sitting in the arena.

Flick: Wow, in the arena? That's like telling someone in the middle of a nor'easter that it's going to snow and it's winter.
