Columbus Blue Jackets "Frenzy"

The Blue Jackets are pretty much done with our Free Agent Frenzy and unless you are a Blue Jackets fan you probably don't know what happened or what we got. We didn't sign a Scott Gomez or a Daniel Briere, we didn't sign a Sheldon Souray, or really any BIG name Free Agents. But, we did sign some guys who apparently are perfect for our organization.

First thing we did was sign Sheldon Brookbank the best defenseman in the AHL. We signed him with the hope of him stepping up and being able to compete at the NHL level now maybe not put up the same numbers but for sure help. We also signed Jiri Novotny, a first round draft pick of the Buffalo Sabres. Novotny is a center who tends to be lazy (luckily we have one of the best coaches in the League to get through to these guys except Zherdev who is just a moron) but we are hoping he will be able to contribute. Our second line center position is up for grabs so time will only tell who will be feeding the puck to Modin. We then signed Jan Hejda, who is expected to be one of our top 4 defenseman. I have heard nothing but good things about him, and can't wait to see him in the ice.

Thinking about who we lost the only name that pops in my head is Anders Erikkson, who is a great defender and on a team like Columbus had a plus/minus of +12. Pretty impressive!! While I will miss seeing him on the ice, I am really happy that he signed in Calgary and I wish him the best of luck.

Rumors have been FLYING that the Blue Jackets are looking for a legitimate #1 goaltender either via trade or Unrestriced Free Agency. That is simply not true. And, trust me, I wish it was true. I have been saying all along that Leclaire is too injury prone. I absolutely adore Norrena but to be successful you need 2 capable goaltenders.

"Until you establish yourself as a bona fide No. 1 goaltender, there are going to be questions," Howson said. "Pascal hasn't done that yet."
However, I do plan on going into this season with faith in Leclaire. I hope he shows everybody that he's not a band-aid and can split the time with Norrena. Leclaire is working out 6 days a week back home in Montreal. I really hope he steps up. He is set to be a Restricted Free Agent on July 1, 2008.

The Jackets have also signed Dan Smith and Derek MacKenzie to two-way contracts. They are likely to be spending most of their time with the Syracuse Crunch. Also, Howson has said that we are in the market for a goaltender to go in and back up Tomas Popperle, it will not be anyone with NHL experience though.

New Caps and Old New Caps

Edit: Judging by the silence around here since I posted and the lack of comments (oh, and the title of the post right before this...nice, Jordi!) I'm guessing I am one of the few people happy today. So I ask - how is that possible?!

...oh, right. No Rangers fans in the HLOG. I forgot. Chin up, ladies - take heart that your teams probably were so close to perfect you didn't need all these silly additions to your roster...right? Right?

May I just say woo...HOO!

This is the first time in a long time that I have not sat around on July 1, July 2, July 3, and wondered what the hell my general manager was doing. This is the first time in a long time that more than one free agent of any note has wanted to come to DC. This is the first time in a very long time that I actually have hope for the Caps' upcoming season that isn't completely based on misplaced delusions.

Let's recap what has frankly been a really exciting two days here in DC, shall we?

- Tom Poti: A puck-moving defenseman coming off a career year and at 30, just hitting his stride on the blue line. Someone I thought the Caps would pick up a few years ago, apparently he was very high on their list from the start - so high that McPhee called at 12:01 pm, the first team to contact Poti. The addition of Poti adds someone who can create the breakout pass (something the Caps have had problems with in the past...clearing the zone? What is clearing the zone? Huh?) and who can quarterback a power play that with Ovechkin and Semin should not have struggled as much as it did last season.

- Viktor Kozlov: Another Isles castoff, Kozlov brings a skilled winger to help set up either one of our young Russians. He has played on a line with Ovechkin for Team Russia and that was apparently part of the draw for him to come to DC. His addition should further bolster the Caps' special teams and more interestingly their fortunes in the shootout...if you followed them at all last year you know that they won once. Out of 17 tries. Yeah, that ain't pretty. Two years at $2.5 million makes him a low-risk bargain, too, which you can't exactly say about some of these long-term deals being tossed around.

- Michael Nylander: Oh, Michael. This one is brand new (like an hour ago brand new) so I'm a little too giddy to really look at this with an analytical eye like the other two. I will say that I loved Nylander during his first stint with the Caps and the thought of him feeding passes to Ovechkin is almost too much to bear, it's so exciting. In Nylander the Caps get a center for their first line who can also mentor his fellow countryman and Caps' rookie Niklas Backstrom, and I for one am beyond excited to have him back in the nation's capital. I think I've said it before...

(As for those false reports that had him going to Edmonton? No idea what happened there. Sorry, Oilers...)

The Draw of the District

Is anyone else going absolutely crazy today?

This is always the worst part, be it the trade deadline or draft day or the opening of the free agency period - the day before. The hours go by so slowly it's almost as though the clock is mocking me. Stories trickle in of another handful of potential unrestricted free agents now locked up by their team...or another player once perched on the cusp who has decided to test the open market.

The worst thing about this final day is the rumors, the guessing games; one "expert" saying one thing, another "expert" saying the complete opposite. If you listen to these pundits, eventually you would assume that every single player is signing with every single team. That's one way to go completely insane.

I'll be honest, despite my impatience for tomorrow to get here already, I'm not sure how optimistic I am that anything will actually happen...at least not involving the Caps. Here in DC we're in an odd situation of having a lot of money to spend yet not being an organization that traditionally draws the big names.

What's more, as I've said before and as many others have pointed out, free agency isn't always the best route to go down for a rebuilding team. Does it pay to lock up a big name for big bucks in a big fat long-term contract, especially with a crop of young talent that will, oddly enough, want to be paid more down the road? For that matter, with the prices already set so high, are any of the available players even worth the price for which they are likely to go?

I guess I'm just interested to see what Caps' general manager George McPhee (or GMGM as he's known in these parts) will do, whether it is to dip into the pool of free agents or try his luck on the trade market. And if anyone else has heard the rumor of a pending 9-year extension for a certain Russian superstar, there are understandably some other questions whirling around as well.

18 hours and counting...

I Hate Everything

I hate the off-season.

I hate Hockeybuzz.com and all of its stupid, conflicting rumors (e4).

I hate that even though I hate Hockeybuzz.com, I can't stop reading it (e5). (Seriously, Garth buy a $#@!%^$ grammar guidebook and use the damn spellcheck!)

I hate Chris Drury and Danny Briere for not being as emotionally attached to us as we are to them.

I hate Darcy Regier for being so unsentimental about the players on his team. (Today. Some days I love him for that.)

I hate not know what's going to happen, I hate thinking something is going to happen when nothing happens at all.

I hate the doom and gloom in Buffalo, I hate all the fans pissing and moaning about things that haven't even happened yet.

I hate the off-season.

CBJ UFA's and RFA's

So my last pot on my Free Agents was a little angry and bitter so I decided to do a decent one...so here ya go.

Restricted Free Agents

  • Alexander Svitov ~ $800,000.00 Center he is a great two-way center. He seems to be a little lazy and hangs out with Zherdev quite a bit. TSN says he "needs to cut down on the number of bad penalties he takes." I would say I would have to agree with that.
  • Jaroslav Balastik ~ $525,000.00 Left/Right Wing he only played 8 games this year but from what I saw I was impressed. TSN has his potential as a third line winger. I would have to agree with that.
  • Joakim Lindstrom ~ $700,000.00 Left/Right Winger needs to put on some weight before he will be successful in the league. Having met the kid...I won't lie he is pretty small but is pretty impressive to watch...he has lots of potential.
  • Curtis Glencross ~ $665,000.00 Left Winger I have a thing for him. Watching him since his days as a Cincinnati Mighty Duck...he continues to progress and improve. He has a lot of potential and hopefully will be up with the Jackets soon.
  • Steven Goertzen ~ $450,0000.00 Right Winger to be honest I haven't seen him as much as I would like to...or maybe I have and I just haven't noticed. Either way, I don't see him making it up to the big league for a permanent job anytime soon.
  • Ole-Kristian Tollefsen ~ $526,000.00 D-man We'd be stupid to get rid of him. Aside from him being one of the nicest players ever...he is also pretty talented. He is a defensive defenseman and is a ton of fun to watch play. He doesn't take crap from anyone and is willing to stick up for his team.
  • Aaron Johnson ~ $450,000.00 D-man great player but he still needs some work to play up in the big leagues. But, I like to think he has a lot of potential.
Unrestricted Free Agents
  • Brian Boucher ~ $475,000.00 Goalie I seriously doubt we will be re-signing him. He was picked up off waivers from the Chicago Blackhawks and although he played decently for us, he's not what we need. Although, I won't lie, I like him a lot better than Leclaire.
  • Derrick Walser ~ $450,000.00 D-man I don't think I can say anything about him...I have never seen him play. Anybody got anything on him?
  • Anders Eriksson ~ $600,000 D-man I have already made my opinion on him pretty clear...we need to re-sign him...he leads our team in +/- and is a great defenseman. It would be a bad decision not to re-sign him...he is cheap...and we need the help on the blue line.
  • Bryan Berard ~ $2,500,000.00 D-man See ya buddy! Has to many injuries, is blind out of an eye...and Hitch doesn't like him. Yeah, you're done.

Devils UFAs, or Should I Be Happy My Team Got Scott Gomez?

[Crossposted to Interchangeable Parts]

Following last summer's angsting over whether the Devils would re-sign UFA Patty Elias, this summer is looking surprisingly stress-free. Sure Rafalski and Gomez are big names, but this year's playoffs proved the Devils have plenty of capable young defensmen to fill Raffie's shoes, and, well, seven years of Gomer have convinced us we can survive without him. As for the rest of the group, half of these guys played in Lowell this year. But let's take a closer look, UFA by UFA, shall we?

Scott Gomez, C: Gomez had been a distant third to Briere and Drury in the center sweepstakes until he tried to cram an entire contract year into eleven playoff games this year. A tremendously gifted puck carrier, Gomez would be a welcome addition to any team. However, he's downright craptacular on the face-off, can't muster a decent shot to save his life, and has never shown any talent or inclination toward playing the other side of the puck. He's a coaching Goldilocks, bristling under coaches who are too soft on him but also under those who are too hard. He's one of those players who employs his father as a business consultant, which has led to strangely contentious contract wheelings and dealings, and which could cause tensions with management down the line. Irreverant and fun-loving, Gomer will likely be a fan-favorite on any team he moves to. The Devils will miss his puck-moving abilities for sure, but looking at the numbers, a) he got 40 goal seasons out of two different wingers, but both were in contract years (and Gionta's dipped considerably lower than that the following season) and b) the Devils had the second-worst offense in the league with Gomer as the top-line center; how much worse can they be without him? (Don't answer that.) For the amount of money that Gomez is asking ($6 million), he just doesn't seem to bring enough to the table that would truly benefit the Devils (other than being Pando's best bud, an honor PandoNation respects highly). And yes, we realize we are in complete and utter denial about this.

Brian Rafalski, D: Raffie is really something of a curious case. He is far and away the Devils' most accomplished puck-moving D-man, and is the de facto number-one guy on the blueline... but he just really doesn't inspire a lot of confidence around stately IPB Manor. We would, of course, love to see him stay a Devil, but if he manages to finagle a hefty contract out of a stupider, less impecunious GM than Lou, we won't be sorry to see Paulie Martin, Andy Greene and Johnny Oduya step up to fill the, uh, "void" left in his absence. The postseason emergence of Greene, in particular, as an able-skating, small defenseman capable of scoring on the PP from the point kind of rendered Raffie obsolete, especially considering that Martin stepped up as the leading minute man among the D corps. That said, Raffie seems like a low-maintenance, nice guy. We wouldn't mind seeing him stick around, but we don't necessarily want to see Lou break the bank to make it happen.

Alexander Mogilny, RW: Uh, seriously? Well, the Devils will certainly miss having to strong-arm him into being "retired" with a "degenerative hip condition", or whatever it was they said kept him back home in Russia this year.

Dan McGillis, D: We don't keep much of an eye on the goings-on in Lowell, so we have no idea what kind of an effect losing him will have on the Devils AHL affiliate. We're sure it'll leave a huge hole, though.

Brad Lukowich, D: We adore Brad Lukowich, if only because for some reason we nicknamed him "Chocosnitch" (a really random Simpsons reference) last year and giggled every time we abbreviated it and called him "Choco". Yes, it takes just that little for us to like a player. He's been a very serviceable defenseman, for the most part playing solid, respectable minutes, and by the end of this past season had really cut down on the number of pucks he deflected into his own net.

Jason Wiemer, LW: There is nothing anyone can say to make us believe Jason Wiemer was under contract with the Devils (NHL or AHL) during any part of the 2006-2007 season. That's just ridiculous.

Grant Marshall, LW: Yet another NHL vet who toiled for the duration of the year in the A. Doc and Chico kept assuring us that Marshall was working wonders teaching the kids up in Lowell about, presumably, stuff like "how to score unexpected, huge playoff goals early in your team's Stanley Cup drive".

Jim Fahey, D: Do we really have to think of something to say here about all the UFAs? Because we have no impression at all about Fahey, other than that he has a fantastic New England accent. What can we say? That never fails to delight us.

Jim Dowd, C: Ocean County, NJ's favorite son really surprised us this year. He lurked around training camp without a contract, then finally got himself into the lineup and proved to be quite the indispensable johnny-on-the-spot in several key situations. He was relegated most of the year to negligible fourth-line minutes, but we liked the gritty, Pando-esque approach he brought to the game, and loved him on the PK. We'd like very much for him to be able to stay in Jersey, if only because he makes Pookie feel better about her daily commute from Mercer County to Ocean County, because his is longer.

Erik Rasmussen, RW: Rasser is the prototypical Devils fourth liner, but with the occasional injuries. Essentially a harder-hitting Jim Dowd, Rasser made do with very little ice time but generally had an impactful shift when he got out there, bringing some energy. If we had a choice between an energy line with Cam Janssen or an energy line with Rasser, we'd take Rasser ten times out of ten, not that Lou listens to us, and not that that's even the issue here. Just saying. (We, uh, don't like Janssen.)

Scott Clemmensen, G: Devils fans have a hard time remembering Clemmer was actually on the team, considering how rarely he made appearances. Considering Marty must start 10-15 fewer times next season if the Devils hope to improve on their playoff showing of this year, we should be more invested in the back-up, but... Seriously, what's the difference between Clemmer sitting on the bench and Frank Doyle sitting on the bench? The Devils have never historically played well in front of the back-up regardless of how good he is. The fact of the matter is no team is going to sign Clemmer (see: his strangely well-reasoned-but-still-snotty column in the Hockey News regarding how screwed he's been by the team) so he, and his $30,000 teeth, will most likely be holding down the Devils bench next season too.

Dan LaCouture, LW: The Devils had Dan LaCouture this past season? When did that happen?!

CBJ Unrestricted Free Agents

We don't really have a whole lot. In fact, we have four...Anders Eriksson, Bryan Berard, Brian Boucher, and Jamie Pushor. The only one I really feel that we need to re-sign is Anders Eriksson, who lead the team in plus/minus with a +12. Which, compared to other teams is good but not great. But, on my team, is AMAZING. Eriksson averaged 20:12 time on ice. In 79 games played he had 0 goals (hey he's a defensive defenseman) and 23 assists. I really hope that we re-sign him but I don't know that it's going to happen considering we don't have a GM. I'm not bitter.
