An Different Sort of Splash

My Sharks GM, the bold Doug Wilson, has already made a splash on the first day of Unrestricted Free Agency. But not by signing some coveted UFA; rather by signing Joe Thornton to a 3 year contract extension. This extension is for 21.6 million over the 3 years. He has one more year left on the old contract, so he'll get his raise to 7.2 million in the 2008-2009 season.

This extension was probably important because Thornton takes up quite a chunk of the Sharks budget. Knowing what those numbers will be for several years will probably really help in figuring out what is affordable for other signings, whether they be through trades or free agency.

I think this was a smart move. Thornton was the hardest working Shark in this last playoffs, which made me a convert (Boston is my second favorite team and I really disliked him when he was there). Now if he can carry that over to the next post season and have the rest of the team follow suit, the Sharks will be a formidable opponent.

I will now be hoping for an extension for Marleau, rather than the rumored trade.

Couldn't agree more, Jocelynn!

Can we sit outside with pickets signs that say, "Save Patty"?

Well, since Drury signed elsewhere and the Sharks were rumored to trade Marleau to clear space for him specifically, I think Marleau is probably safe. I think (and hope) DW will try to get a contract extension.

I really can't say how relieved I was when I saw that Drury was off the market.

If DW knows what's good for him that's exactly what he'll do.
