So I'm about 30 million days late to finding out about the actual concept of the "NHL get celebrity recognition!" scheme. To me I know they probably get the tickets free but I always expected them to at least have to be the one calling in and begging.
I guess I was wrong, apparently they get this fiddly little card with a phone number and ring up going "Bob, me mate Arnie and I want a seat. Now I don't want those shoddy ones with the drunk blokes spewing down my back like last time. And yeah, this is uh... Mick Jagger. Yeah. Two tickets for Mick Jagger."
I don't know why it irks me that when they ring this number, the tickets are served up on a silver platter. I guess I thought they'd at least have to go to the trouble of finding out what game they need tickets for and they'll have to fight a smelly old hippie for them. I mean when Snoop Dogg's all "yeah I'm a real fan, I like sitting close to the action and all that shit", you really know he just figured out how to dial a number. And hell he wouldn't even give an interview if he weren't releasing a new album.
Of course Anaheim attendance may be hardly a sellout, but maybe it's just me being all grouchy over "omg I saw Rachel McAdams at the NHL Game!" "Great! Now all the 14 year old fans will get interested in hockey!" argument. Sure I love Lex Luther and it's uber cool to know he appreciates the fine art of hockey - but to think that celebrity adoration will mean great rep for the NHL seems a bit of a stretch to me.
However if Bono turned up at a game...

Just some food for thought. Not really. Shut up.

Snoop Dog at the Ducks game was classic. He obviously had no idea what was going on but was enjoying the hell out of it.

If Bono turned up at a game, it'd be to find somebody to argue with about ending world poverty. Or something.
I know this probably doesn't make it any better, but Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luther for the non-smallville fans) actually is a big hockey fan. He usually plays in the Microsoft Celebrity Hockey Challenge in Seattle for childrens Charities.
I know if I had access to that number they'd end up knowing my voice. "Hey, McPhizzle. You're going to be in (insert city) this week? How many tickets would you like?"
i just hope they appreciate it...

LOL!
I'm with Jordi. If Bono showed up at a hockey game, it's all good. If he brings Larry with him, even better.
I'd heard somewhere (sorry... nowhere specific I can cite) that each team is supposed to set aside a handful of seats for the NHL's use. One thing would be for celebrities - also I'd guess for scouts, ex-players, anybody else Gary needs to suck up to.
It sort of makes sense for TV purposes - that way the league/team publicity people can just tell the cameramen which seats to hit up for some celebrity action, and no, DO NOT aim the KissCam at them.
Though Bono and Larry? Heh. The mind boggles.
Michael Rosenbaum was one of the few reasons that I ended up watching Smallville for 4 grueling seasons.
I read somewhere that last season the league offered Steve Carrell free tickets to which he had to decline. [What! You LOVE HOCKEY, STEVE!] but the woman who played Jan accepted.
Yeeppp... Michael Rosenbaum (and some of his Smallville co-stars, but mostly him) has been sighted watching Vancouver Canucks games at GM Place since Smallville started filming in Vancouver/Surrey (I don't know if they're still filming it in BC).
I don't exactly know if he's watching Canucks games cause he's a Canucks fan or cause he's just a hockey fan and this is the closest hockey game he can go to, but it's still pretty cool. :3
Mike Myers, Cuba Gooding Jr... are the 2 celebs I most often see on TV/hockey related. :3
now here's a question - what about local nfl stars catching games on a fairly regular basis? cause that happens all the time in the 'burgh.
i remember a game heinz ward attended. they decide to point him out to everyone cause he had just won mvp of the steelers or something like that. poor guy had to leave after that because everyone kept coming up to him offering their congrats.
snoop dog at the ducks game was hilarious : ) for shizzle.
I love Lex Luther but god, he probably knows that he can get into anything just because he's a celebrity. I'm a little bitter that he's not actually an Oilers fan AND he posed for a photo in the dressing room last year.
I guess the real point of it was that it'd be more fund if they had to face the hardships of getting a ticket in a sold out place. "Hey Scalper, Bono wants two tickets".
