I am as loyal as they come. However, I will admit I stray. But in mind only. And I keep it very secretive (well, until I have a few beers).
It's hard to really only cheer for YOUR team. Why? Well, with the trade deadline just ending, I'd say that's a perfect example. I will continue to cheer for MY players, but there is such a fine line there. You can't just dump your love for a player after he gets traded. It's hard. You'll eventually need to but it may be a long process. If you have a deep passion for this player, you may have to take that into hiding. And never, ever speak of it again. Especially if the player traded was made out to be a trader to your team.
With all that said, although never on either of my teams, anytime Mike Modano plays against the Blues or Panthers, I'm secretly watching and cheering for him. And wishing the cameraman would just follow him the whole game. I'll always wish Louie a good game. I say a little prayer for Bubba when he's playing against my boys. And I watched and cheered for Chris Pronger way too long to just let him go. We have a history. Shanny will always be in my heart. I will always smile when Hedi gets a good hit even if it's against my team.
There really are quite a few more. And it's certainly not that I'm a bandwagoner. A true fan is not just a fan of his/her own team. They respect the sport. They're a fan of the sport as a whole. And that's what I am. I am a hockey fan.

It's Not That I'm Not Loyal...

Well said, Colleen. I love it when people are able to look past their team colours and be aware of the talent in the rest of the league allowing them to respect other players.
