Too Cool (and Old) for School...

How old does one have to be to consider retirement in the NHL?

It's a question Scotty N. spent a few months asking himself and decided he wasn't ready to hang up his skates yet.

It's a question Mark Recchi should have asked himself before the start of the season. For those who haven't heard (and they haven't been making too many waves about this) Mark Recchi was sent down to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on waivers. Sure they'll probably call him back up tomorrow or something. But still. Wtf is a guy like Recchi doing getting put on waivers in the first place?

Recchi had a good run last year. He was on Sid's wing, a good spot even for an old timer. He brought all that "locker room leadership" they love to yack about. His skating was a little slow, but the Pens were slated for the cup this year. So I can see him wanting to come back.

But at what point do you gracefully step out? Hang up your skates and say "Gee that was fun - we had a good run and now it's time to go home to the kids, wife and some beer. I'm getting to damn old to keep up with those young kids they keep buying. Lets end it on a high point!"

We've seen it before in this town - can we say Mario....

Sadly Wes Walz has stepped away, and I respect him for it.

Mario came back after retirement, and Recchi's been traded 3 (right?) times...maybe he'll be back a fourth?
